Self Portrait V.S the Selfie

I don't think the selfie is comparable to a self portrait. Hours of work and focus go into perfecting these paintings and saying that a snap of a blurry snapchat picture is as artful as the hours of painting and precision it takes to create these. I can understand the comparison in the process of taking a picture, or capturing an image of yourself, but saying that they're the same is demoting all the hard work people spend on these paintings.

While selfies may not be the equivalent of self portraits, they have helped break the usually non diverse spread of self portraits that are apparent in museums and other galleries. In many museums it's easy to see the usual portrait is a of a white male, and with the social media trend of selfies, men and women of different backgrounds, races, ethnicities, cultures, and parts of the world can express themselves in a modern version of the self portrait.

In another way, selfies are the new contemporary art and photography step into the future. Usually the wealthy and privileged were the only ones who could afford to have self portraits made of themselves, and now we can recreate that in a new way with a tap of a button. These new selfies aren't comparable to self portraits in the sense of artistry and dedication, but can be a new and modern way for people to share and express themselves in a way that similar to self portraits.

3. The thematic story I see throughout my yearbook is the idea of being whoever you are, and the entire school gathering together to celebrate our differences, and being able to be yourself at school, around faculty and classmates.

Phobia Project

1. A phobia is the extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.
2.
Acrophobia- the fear of heights
Claustrophobia- the fear of being enclosed
Acarophobia- the fear of bugs
Achluophobia- the fear of the dark
Athazagoraphobia- the fear of being forgotten, ignored, or abandonment

The fear of the dark photo could be taken in the dark, with a person in all black, looking huddled and scared, with interesting shadowing and highlights, and i envision it being taken vertically.

Most Important

This picture just made me want to cry when I looked at it. The raw pain and grief is so apparent and unedited that it's almost hard to look at.

The boy looks so fancy in his pressed suit, and neat hair, but when you look at his face you can tell all he wants is to be with his father. The act of a child pulling on the mom's skirt or hiding by it is something that's carried throughout movies, and is usually seen as silly, or funny, but in this context it's heartbreaking.

At first I thought this picture was sad because he's lost both his legs, and I felt sorry for him. But after reading the description I realized what kinds of despicable things he had done. It made me realize that I judge too much of the single story, the idea that just because of a person's appearance, situation, clothing, or culture, doesn't tell me anything about them.

1. My favorite songs from 2016 were 'Hello,' and 'I hate you I love you.' Now if someone started playing Hello right now I would probably gag and plug my ears, but for months I was obsessed with the song, and my mom and I heard it for the first time on a rainy drive to school, and we both cried, so I guess it's connected to the memory too. I love 'I hate you, I love you,' because it's just so catchy and I can never get it out of my head. I love the beats, the voices, and the musicality and lyrics that tell such a powerful story i can connect to.

2. Zootopia was by far the best movie of 2016! I saw it with my best friend and her family, late at night at the Alamo, with snacks, and milkshakes, and the storyline and characters were hilarious and made me smile. It was different from every other movie in the way that the bottom line was about abandoning stereotypes. It connected back to the real world in the fact that our world is becoming violent and divided in such a way that it's hard to celebrate each other.

3. Terror attacks around the world is the biggest news story from 2016. It's scary because it's still extremely relevant. It wasn't just a one time incident that happened, but it's reoccurring, and always hovering right over our heads. it's not something you can prepare for, but something that happens and blindsides you without any warning.

4. The most important person of 2016 to me was Simone Biles, because she used her elevated platform to spread positivity and messages of racial injustice, violence, feminism, and equality. Being so young, Biles has shared her story of perseverance, and hard work in the face of doubt. She speaks out about being raised by her grandmother and methods to push yourself to the limit, mentally, and physically.

5. Muhammad Ali was the most powerful and influential news of sports and entertainment in 2016. with his death, his many inspirational quotes and speeches were resurfaced, and we learned so much more about him. His confidence was seen as overpowering, but his hard work made up for it. So many fans and people were devastated by his death, but we all respect his passion and his endurance for the perseverance of his craft/

1. Something I did on my break that was exciting was going to Fort Worth with my mom and having a photoshoot on the street with the photographer I am an ambassador for. I took pictures on the street, posed by cars and people, posing next to buildings and skylines, in front of crowds and having lights placed in front of me, they ended u turning out really beautiful and cool, and doing it at night was something I had never done.
2. My New Year's resolution is to spend more time outside and with nature and my family and less time on my phone indoors. When I spend time outside I feel so much more rejuvenated and relaxed and in tune with my priorities and body, and I feel like I know what's important and what I can do to get time away from things that don't really matter.
3. In 2017 I'm looking forward to making new friends, and spending time at camp and getting closer with the new friends I've made in high school.
