Opinion Story

Opinion Story

Dance, band, tennis, theater, choir, swim team, football, soccer, art, lacrosse, softball, student council, yearbook, photography, JROTC. What do all of these activities have in common? They are all positive outlets for students to channel their stress, frustration, energy, and learn to work with a team.

6/10 students participate in extracurricular activities such as the ones that were listed above, and it's proven that those who do have a lower dropout rate, higher GPA's, and a happier high school experience. Being involved in activities, whether it be at school or outside of school, keeps students busy, which helps them stay out of trouble, and teaches critical life skills.

Students in team sports learn tolerance, teamwork, patience, compromise, and other extremely important skills that are crucial to adult life and jobs. Strategy sports such as football and soccer teach kids problem solving skills, and develop a stronger and more developed mind. These skills improve grades in math and science, as well as other logic and strategy based subjects.

Students who participate in art programs such as band, choir, theater, dance, art, and other creative activities have a healthy way to express themselves. Connecting with other people who enjoy the same things as you helps develop friendships that you can truly be yourself in, and help you share a common interest. When researching evidence and statistics, I found 22,800,000 posts under the search 'How Music Saved My Life," with thousands of comments and blogs, showing that when you find something you love, it can even save your life.

If a group, club, or team a student participates in competes in competitions, it gives the student a positive sense of competition and working hard as a team for a mutual goal. Winning a competition is an indescribable sense of payoff from all their hard work, and inspires them to keep working, while affirming their talent and giving them confidence.

Leadership based programs such as student council, safety patrol, or PALS, which we have here at Bowie, give students the tools to expand their horizons and surround themselves with equally motivated and passionate students as them. Making a difference, with perhaps a student government position, gives students a positive accomplishment, and sense of pride.

Balancing an extracurricular activity with schoolwork is an excellent way to develop time management skills, which are so important when getting into higher education such as upper class high school, college, and even future jobs in early adulthood and a later career. Being in an extracurricular activity also has physical and mental health benefits.

Being a part of an organization gives students a sense of self worth and accomplishments, boosting their self confidence and giving them positive challenges. Many young athletes and artists use their art or sport as an escape from a stressful school project, friend problems, or family issues.

Not only having mental health benefits, participating in activities gives many students a physical health boost. Participating in a sport gives students a healthy workout regimen; from doing conditioning and stretching as a team, to actively running and working.

Many sports teams also teach students about the importance of taking care of their bodies, teaching them the healthiest options for food, the right way to stretch and work out, and the dangers of drugs and alcohol. A National study of US schools show than student athletes are 22% less likely to smoke cigarettes than a student who doesn't participate in a sport.

Many school programs also have a "Pass to play" rule in place, which is an incentive that helps motivate students to pass their classes so they can participate in games or competitions. Since many students have no desire to be left out, or lose the chance to win, they work much harder in school to keep their grades up, study for tests and exams, and consult with their teachers.

Conner Washington is a 21 year old basketball player who has often made the claim "Basketball saved my life." Washington's mom died when he was just 11, and basketball was what stopped him from a life full of drugs, alcohol, crime, and violence. He realized he needed to channel his energy and grief into a positive way, and make his mother proud. "Without basketball I would probably be in jail, or even dead." said Washington.

With millions of schools all over the nation having hundreds of clubs and activities, you're bound to find something you love. If we help our students find an interest they're passionate about, and get involved, millions of lives will be changed for the better.

Final Exam Preview

1.) Summarize what you watched and read about.
iMovie was always a tool that I didn't think could do much, but after reading some of these articles I figured out that I can use many techniques to create a professional feeling video. You can overlap pictures and videos with sound, add text and transitions, and use different filters and graphics.
2.) Tell me one thing that you already knew about iMovie that the website explained.
I already knew that with iMovie you can add music and sound effects.
3.) Tell me one thing that you learned new today that you didn’t know before.
I learned that there are many different ways you can trim and perfect your footage so it gives you an approximate time and the look you want.
4.) What are you concerned about with this final project?
I just wish that the project could just be video footage without adding pictures, and I wish I could only use music and my narration so that it doesn't seem like a slideshow or to choppy.
5.) What are you confident you can complete early and have ready to use?
I am confident I will have entertaining and cool footage to show.
6.) If I asked you today, what do you think you will do for your video?
This weekend I'm going to Dallas for photoshoot, dance competition and shopping trip, so I'll probably film one of those and transform it into a story.

Nut Graf

A Nut Graf is the meat of the story. It explains all the smaller details from the lead paragraph, and gives more of the fluff and the details. The Nut Graf gives all the extra information that you want to know about the subject. Traditionally, the Nut Graf is not used in hard news stories, and more often than not are used in inspirational or interesting, fun topics, where hard facts isn't the end goal, but has more interesting 'fluff' pieces. A Nut Graf is the point in the news story when the reader should have the question "Why do I care?" answered. The Nut Graf reinforces the knowledge and end theme of the article.
The Nut Graf connects the lead with a transition and explains how the different points in the article connect back to the main thesis and conclusion. The Nut Graf explains the news value, and needs to be strong to show that when in the real world, with competitors and other contrasting articles, you need a strong nut graf to prove why your facts and story is stronger and more accurate than anyone else's.  The nut graf should have the biggest impact on the reader's knowledge and opinion of the story, being the strongest part of the article.

Student of the Month Story

Positioned in front of me with sandy blonde hair and a trademark infectious laugh, is Chris Lamm, James Bowie High School's April 2017 Student of the Month. Lamm has incredible scores on tests and quizzes, and has an apparent care for school. Apart from having an earnest outlook on school, Lamm is not your typical Student of the Month. Although he is serious when it comes to his schoolwork, Chris doesn't just get flawless grades, and cram before big tests, but he takes time to form an opinion about the literature in English, understand the equations in Math, and appreciate conjugations in Spanish. He forms his own way of thinking, and that's what makes him such a great student.

We've established that Lamm is a forward thinker, but that's not all he does. Lamm is also involved in after school commitments including our very own Starlight Theater Company here at Bowie High School. He has participated in many time consuming shows and rehearsals after school, including the school's spring musical production of "The Who's: Tommy." He not only has rehearsals after school, but also on the weekends to perfect the performances. Lamm says he's developed time management skills from balancing his extracurriculars with his time consuming classes and courses. Participating in activities at school has helped him make new friends that he can spend time with in Theater, and in other classes. "I like coming to school because I get to spend time with my friends," is what Lamm said when asked if he enjoyed coming to school.

"Chris Lamm's great grades and participation in class is what earned him our April Student of the Month slot," stated Bowie's Principal Mrs. Leos. To further understand what academics and devotion go into maintaining such a high GPA and attendance, I asked Chris some more academic questions. Unlike many Freshman at Bowie, Lamm admits he does study for exams and quizzes. He claims he does his best studying alone, usually rereading notes and either quizzing himself, or having a family member ask him questions. Usually he studies in silence to keep his concentration, but when it comes to a creative project when he may be coloring or building something, he enjoys having music in the background. Chris likes to check in with his grades and teachers, which is why is favorite school app is TEAMS Mobile, which allows him to access this information quickly and easily.

Chris has developed an interest in Biology, and is intrigued with plants and wildlife. Although Lamm is not sure what his college plans are, we can all be sure he'll go far with whatever he chooses to do with his future. Ladies and Gentleman, your April 2017 Student of the Month, Chris Lamm! You can be our next student of the month! To apply pick up an application in the front office and turn it into your Geography teacher by April 30th.

Sports Ananlysis

1. Alyssa Schukar
2. Stories
3. - needed more distance or zoom/all same distance
-too negative theme without enough substance
- themes to common and overdone
4. -Haiti photos had interesting color background
- fallen girl was real and not posed with good choice of competitors legs passing
5. I didn't like the photographer because all pictures were very all over the place without a common theme and were no zoomed enough and too posed and fake.

1. Jordan Murph
2. Sports
3. -expand on rule of thirds: don't repeat techniques: too 'postcard'
- no surfer in surfing picture along with photos that were unnecessary or don't belong
- as the portfolio continued, it started going downhill and didn't remain consistent
4. -great lighting composition
-good work with color and graphics
5. I liked this photographer. I think they did a great job of capturing the victories and downfalls of sports while for the most part maintaining a steady light composition and interesting content.

1. Justin Mott
2. Stories
3. -have a better focused subject of photos
-some confusing and irrelevant pictures
-needs a better selective story focus
4. -shocking and different stories that make you stare and almost disturb you
-good color and graphic work

A. The strengths of the winner that the judges liked were how the portfolio was put together nicely with no blanks, no weak photos, and a consistent technical and creative process. In all the pictures, the subjects had clear reactions or actions, the photographer was so close in the process, he seemed like one of the players in the game or activity, and included interesting shapes that were interesting to the eye.
B. What I liked about the photographer was that it had a very innovative point of view where pictures were taken from aerial or underneath, and gave you a new fresh insight to the same sport of action other photographers continually capture. The photos have a good emotion that is self explanatory and obvious, and the photographer had good editing skills that added to the photo's integrity, and didn't subtract from it.
C. Narrowing down to the winner came with being very harsh on projects they had originally loved. All judges had to observe each photo individually, as well as a portfolio as a whole, and consider it from there.

1. I agree with the judges on the photo with the badminton player, and having the 'ball' suspended over his eye. It has an incredible point of view and viewpoint, and the green background of the tennis court is a solid and non distracting background to the picture.
2. I disagree with the judges on the picture of the baseball stands with the man selling cotton candy. It was entered in the 'No Ball' category and I think it captures the excitement and classic experiencing of being in the stands instead of just being on the field. It used leading lines with the bleachers, as well as color and graphics with the cotton candy, and a viewpoint, when you can't see the man's head, but the cotton candy.
